Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Sadeqa Johnson wrote the book after touring a former slave jail and trading post. On one of the walls she saw a photo of the jailer, his black wife and their five(!!) children. She wondered what it would be like for a black woman to be married to such a man.
The book admirably shows the horrible conflicts one would experience in such a situation. I was impressed by the delicate balancing act of the author in trying to show that the jailer truly did love his slave wife, yet he was clearly a monster.
An emotionally difficult book to read, but an important and gripping one.
