Paris in the Time of Covid

Paris art and fashion. January + Covid = surprisingly uncrowded streets.
Winter sunshine in Paris. C’est belle!

There are direct flights from Paris to Guadeloupe, so we had booked ourselves a few days to enjoy Paris after leaving Malaga. With the wild spread of the Omicron Covid variant, it hasn’t turned out to be the Paris we are used to, but we are still having a lovely time. And there are upsides: I’ve never seen the streets of Paris so uncrowded!

We need to “pass” Covid tests within 24 hours of boarding our flight, so we decided to forego theatre this time. Sitting for hours in a poorly ventilated room with hundreds of other people just didn’t seem worth the risk. Nevertheless, we did go, with our Parisian friends, Loic & Nicole, to see the exhibit of work by fashion designer, Thierry Mugler, which turned out to be more crowded than I felt comfortable with. The show was so fascinating that we stayed a long time even so. Let’s hope we are still OK for our tests!

On our way there we wandered past a series of enormous sculptures by Richard Orlinski. Most were giant glossy, primary coloured polar bears and King Kongs. I did like this one though.

No matter where you look in Paris, there are always lovely things to see.

Inspired by the fashion show, we went to the Marais to check out the clothing sales. Officially the sales aren’t allowed to start until January 12, but they get around that by having “ventes privĂ©es” — advance sales for private clients. The reality is that anyone who walks in during the few days before the sale is considered a private client. To my amazement, I actually ended up (a) trying on and (b) buying a dress! (Dresses almost never fit me.) So for fun we did a fashion photo shoot on our hotel balcony.
