Liberation Day: Stories by George Saunders
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I generally prefer novels to short stories, but Liberation Day, the latest story collection by Booker Prize winning author, George Saunders, was every bit as enthralling as any novel. The stories are wildly inventive and varied, with an underlying dark sense of humour. Ghoul is set in what seems like the borderland between Purgatory and Hell. It gives a taste of life (even a supposedly fulfilling one) in a totalitarian regime, where one dare not question the official line. The poignant story, Elliott Spencer, is a tale of homeless people who have their minds “scraped” so they can be used as political protesters. Is it better to be turned into a mindless protester or live a life of desperation on the streets? His stories are entertaining, and leave you mulling about humanity.
